ECBA vs CCBA vs CBAP: Which IIBA Certification Should You Get?

The IIBA offers three core business analysis certifications, and they're built for very different stages of a career. Picking the wrong one wastes money or gets your application rejected. Here's how they compare and how to choose.

01The three certifications at a glance

02ECBA: for getting started

The Entry Certificate in Business Analysis tests whether you understand the fundamentals in the BABOK Guide: the vocabulary, the core techniques and how the knowledge areas fit together. You don't need any BA work experience, only the required training hours.

It's most useful for career changers and graduates who need a recognised signal on their CV. It won't replace a portfolio, but it can help you get past the first screen.

03CCBA: for practising BAs

The Certification of Capability in Business Analysis is for people already doing the work. Besides the total hours, IIBA expects your experience to span several BABOK knowledge areas, so keep a record of your projects and the kind of work you did on each.

The exam is scenario-based: it tests whether you can apply techniques, not just name them.

04CBAP: for senior practitioners

The Certified Business Analysis Professional is the senior certification. It requires substantial experience across at least four BABOK knowledge areas, and the exam leans heavily on case studies. It signals that you can lead analysis on complex work, not just contribute to it.

I'm working towards the CBAP myself. Documenting your experience against the knowledge areas takes time, so start collecting evidence early.

05Does a certification get you hired?

A certification helps, but it's rarely the deciding factor. What gets you hired is evidence that you can do the job: a portfolio for beginners, and delivered projects with measurable results for experienced BAs. Think of a certification as something that gets your CV read, not something that gets you the offer.

If you're choosing between a certificate and a portfolio project for your first role, build the portfolio first. The guide to becoming a BA in Nigeria explains what to put in it.

06Which one should you choose?

  • No BA experience yet: ECBA, alongside a portfolio project.
  • Two to five years of BA work: CCBA, if you meet the hours.
  • Five or more years leading analysis: CBAP.
  • Working mainly in agile teams: consider an agile certification alongside, such as the PSM I, which I hold, or the IIBA's own agile analysis certification.

07A simple study plan

  1. Read the BABOK Guide by knowledge area, not cover to cover in one go.
  2. Complete the required training hours with an IIBA-endorsed provider.
  3. Practise questions weekly, and review every one you get wrong.
  4. Relate every technique to real work, your own or a portfolio case. The scenario questions reward people who have used the techniques.
  5. Book the exam when your practice scores are consistently well above the pass mark.

08Common questions

Which IIBA certification is best for beginners?

The ECBA. It requires no business analysis work experience, only 21 hours of training, and tests your understanding of the fundamentals.

How much does the CBAP cost?

As of September 2026, a USD 145 application fee plus a USD 350 exam fee for IIBA members or USD 505 for non-members. Check iiba.org for current fees.

Can I take the CBAP without experience?

No. The CBAP requires 7,500 hours of business analysis experience in the last 10 years, spread across several BABOK knowledge areas.

Is an IIBA certification necessary to get a BA job in Nigeria?

It isn't required, but it can help your CV stand out, especially at larger organisations. A strong portfolio or track record matters more.
